It’s time for seed starting!
This being my second year of starting seeds, I’m using some things I learned last year to make some small improvements in my technique.
First things first, though: deciding what to grow this year. I am going to be rearranging the garden space, and I’ve decided that instead of two large rectangular raised beds (8×4′), I’m going to go with three square beds (4×4′). This will slightly reduce the amount of space I have, but it will be more manageable and will hopefully encourage me to plant a more realistic amount of stuff. So here’s what I’m thinking:
Summer Squash ‘Early Prolific Straightneck’ | Pumpkin ‘Winter Luxury’
Lettuce ‘Iceberg’
Lettuce ‘Red Velvet’ | Lettuce ‘Rocky Top Mix’ | Spinach ‘Bloomsdale Long-Standing’
Second (middle):
Watermelon ‘Black-Seeded Ice Cream’ | Cucumber ‘Early Russian’
Carrot ‘Nantes Coreless’
Cabbage ‘Brunswick’
Third (right):
Tomato ‘Chadwick’ (cherry) | Tomato ‘Salsa Favorite’
Hot Pepper ‘Anaheim’ | Sweet Pepper ‘Emerald Giant’
Cabbage ‘Mammoth Red Rock’
Pretty much everything needs to be sown now, with the exception of the cucumber and watermelon (April 29) and carrot (April 1).
I bought some heat mats for the things that like a bit more warmth in order to germinate, and I’m excited to see how much of a difference it makes.
