So it’s been a bit of a rough summer. I haven’t really had it in me to get out in the garden on a regular basis, and the weeds in the back yard and gardens got really out of control. Recently some dear friends of mine introduced me to UFYH and it inspired me to get out there and unfuck the garden.
You can see here that there are weeds throughout the fence-side garden and there’s a sizable weed tree growing against the garage.
Fence-side Weedville in all its glory:
And looking back into the supposed veg garden area:
While the morning glories on the fence have been doing a nice job camouflaging the veg garden, Weedville was still trying to take over.
I started to tackle this on Friday. It was the first day of my vacation, and I really wanted to get it under control. I’ve spent the last few mornings concentrating on weeding.
Here we are on Saturday, starting to see progress in the veg garden:
And the garage weed tree has been chopped down:
Morning Glories no longer obligated to act as a shield:
*Trumpet flourish!*
And today, after three consecutive mornings spent doing nothing else, we have vanquished Weedville!
The birdbath is once again visible. Some of the bagiant weeds out there were so well established that I had to use a shovel to dig out the roots. UGH. My sinuses feel as though there may someday be a day when they aren’t full of allergens and the contact dermatitis I always get from touching weeds has almost faded. Here’s to not ever letting it get this out of control again! UFYH is about tackling things in manageable chunks – here’s to manageable.

Good work! It looks fabulous now–and don’t you feel great having accomplished that? Now you can really enjoy the rest of your vacay. Wish I could do my yard, too, but the poison ivy has run so rampant, I hardly dare get into any of the beds!
Thanks, Ann! I do feel like this was a big accomplishment. I am so sorry to hear you have poison ivy! That is no picnic – the thistles we have hardly compare!
That looks great! I had to do the same thing in my vegetable gardens last week. We have a Weedville on the side of our house that is still there. I think because I just get tired of yanking everything out and then having it grow right back. And those weed trees are the worst! So satisfying to cut them down, isn’t it?
Thanks so much! I really can’t believe how out of control I let it get. I was almost too embarrassed to post the ‘before’ pictures! I totally hear you on things growing back so quickly. I just bought 10 pounds of white dutch clover seed so I can seed for a cover crop in between the raised beds (I’m tired of having to replace the straw all the time) and on the fence-side bed that is mostly empty. The last few years we have been seeding the back lawn with clover to fill in the bare patches and it’s really nice looking, actually. You can mow it but it doesn’t grow that high (so it doesn’t necessarily need mowing very often) and it doesn’t turn brown when the dogs do their business on it. It spreads but slowly (not aggressively) and it’s easy to pull out if you change your mind, so I think it will work well.
