I recently found out that someone in my life, the wonderfully talented woman who does my hair, is facing a challenging situation with her new baby. Her daughter has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This is clearly a difficult thing to deal with, but she and her family have an amazing attitude about it and a truly inspiring outlook. They have a team of specialists they’re calling The Justice League of Lana. I found this so inspiring! To be faced with a challenge like this and still find humor and awesomeness is amazing. Upon reading about this, I immediately wanted to DO SOMETHING, but of course what can you do? You can support research, for one. But I also felt compelled to make something. I thought that since she has the Justice League backing her up, Lana should have something Super to wear.
I found a baby sweater pattern that had a neat, almost cape-like collar. I then set about making up a chart for the S logo. I used a spreadsheet and freehanded it by highlighting cells in the general shape, and then tweaked it until it looked about right.
I think it turned out quite well! I started out doing this as intarsia, but I don’t do it very often and my skills are just not up to par for something I’m going to give as a gift. So I decided to do duplicate stitch instead.
So there we have the Superbaby Sweater! I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. The collar could definitely be made longer if one wanted to make it truly cape-like, but I wasn’t sure how well that would work in practical reality, so I kept it to the pattern’s specifications.
So please, everyone, send out some good vibes for Lana and her family! If you’d like to support research on SMA, you can do so here.
