seeds, glorious seeds

My big seed order arrived from Baker Creek this week. Hooray! Along with the seeds I have left from last year and a few that haven’t arrived yet, these will be the contents of the veg beds this year.

2009 veg seeds

This will be the main veg bed at the back of the back yard:

2009 veg seeds: peas 2009 veg seeds: beans

2009 veg seeds: cucumber 2009 veg seeds: squash 2009 veg seeds: melons 2009 veg seeds: peppers

2009 veg seeds: tomatoes ASPARAGUS (existing) 2009 veg seeds: carrots 2009 veg seeds: cabbage

2009 veg seeds: broccoli2009 veg seeds: celery 2009 veg seeds: spinach HYSSOP (existing) GARLIC (existing) 2009 veg seeds: lettuce

I still have some popcorn and potatoes on order, and Baker Creek was out of edamame, so I need to place an order for some or find some locally. I’ll also be interspersing some of this stuff into the front landscape, including at least asparagus, cabbage, and perhaps a few other things.

hee-straw

I’m finally not coughing every five minutes (after two+ weeks fighting bronchitis/walking pneumonia/the lingering plague – it’s not quite all gone yet but it’s getting there) so this morning K and I headed out to the Plymouth Nursery to look at plants and pick up some straw for the veg beds. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a number of the plants I’ve been eyeing for the front yard. I took photos of some possibilities and we brought home the straw, which I then spread out in the back beds.

I also spread some of the straw out behind the garage to try to fend off the weeds that seem to crop up there every year. We trimmed this weed tree back somewhat a few weeks ago, but I’d love to be rid of it completely.

I do finally feel like we’re in the home stretch to the point where the really fun part of veg gardening begins.
